FAQs

Here are some frequently asked questions about the garden. Please refer to the garden bylaws for complete details.

Q: Who is eligible for a plot in the community garden?
A: Anyone who does not currently hold a plot in another community garden is eligible to rent a plot in the Port Coquitlam Community Garden. Note that priority is given to residents of Port Coquitlam living in a multi-family residence, such as a condo, apartment, suite, or townhouse.

Q: How much does it cost to rent a plot in the garden?
A: For the 2024 season, the rental fee for a plot (approximately 10’ x 12’) is $50.00 per year. The initial rental fee includes one key to the garden gate and shed. (There is a $10 fee for additional or replacement keys.)

Q: May I use chemicals in my plot?
A: No. Only organic fertilizers and pesticides may be used. The City of Port Coquitlam bans the use of any synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers on the garden.

Q: Are gardening tools provided?
A: Large tools, such as rakes, shovels, and garden forks, as well as wheelbarrows, are provided for gardeners to use. Hoses and watering cans are also available. Gardeners are expected to provide their own hand tools.
(Note that tools and equipment belonging to the garden are for use only on the garden property and are not to be removed.)

Q: Who looks after the common areas of the garden?
A: We all do. Every gardener is expected to contribute at least 8 hours of volunteer time over the season to the garden community. Volunteer work includes mowing and trimming the grass, weeding the common areas, and other work as required. Refer to the Garden Plot Rental Agreement and Waiver of Liability for a list of volunteer activities.

Q: May I bring my pet to the garden?
A: Yes, pets are allowed in the garden, but they must be leashed at all times. Also, you must clean up after your pet and take any pet waste offsite for disposal.

Q: What do I do with green waste (e.g., weeds) from my plot? What about garbage?
A:  Green waste disposal is provided onsite. However, all gardeners must remove any garbage, such as plant containers, coffee cups, etc., daily.

Q: How do I register for a garden plot?
A: Go to our Contact page for details. We will get in touch with you to confirm plot availability and rental arrangements. Before you register to request a garden plot, please be sure to read the garden bylaws and review the plot rental agreement.
